  • 01·The brief

    The airwell decides

A conserved two-storey shophouse in Tanjong Pagar, its airwell the only source of light in the middle of the plan. The family's brief was to let the airwell decide the plan: every room to touch it, and the collection of ceramics to live in the light it gives.

  • 02·The approach

    Terracotta, teak, air

Joinery is built to the party walls in teak, leaving the airwell open through the section; terracotta floors run from street door to rear kitchen. Cabinets are lit by the airwell's shaft of light, and a single brass rail carries the staircase through both floors.

  • 03·The result

    Completed in 2024

The house was completed in 2024. The airwell does what it has always done — pulls air and light through the plan — now with rooms arranged to receive it. Published with the family's consent.
