The project

A vineyard house at the foot of the Andes built with rammed earth from its own excavation, its thick walls storing the day's heat for the mountain nights.

  • Discipline

    Vineyard Residence

  • Location

    Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

  • Year

    2023

  • Area

    520 m²

  • 01·The brief

    Walls from the vineyard

A house among vine rows at 1,100 metres in the Uco Valley, where nights are cold even after hot days. The clients asked for walls made from the site itself, and for the house to disappear from the winery across the field.

  • 02·The approach

    Rammed earth from the excavation

The earth removed for the courtyard becomes the walls: rammed in 300 mm lifts, left raw outside and in, capped with a broad roof of pale timber. Deep openings face the vine rows and the Andes; a covered outdoor room faces the evening sun.

  • 03·The result

    Completed in 2023

The house was completed in 2023 and has taken three harvests. The walls carry the vineyard's colour; the thermal mass does what the models promised. Published with the family's consent.
