The project

A timber house on a redwood ridge above the Pacific, its cultivated plateau barely touching the slope and its rooms turning toward the ocean through one long glazed wall.

  • Discipline

    Coastal Residence

  • Location

    Big Sur, California, USA

  • Year

    2026

  • Area

    360 m²

  • 01·The brief

    One flat place

A ridge site above the Big Sur coast, nearly all slope. The brief was to build on the one flat place the site offered and touch the ground nowhere else: a house for a writer who wanted the ocean in every working hour and the fog to arrive through the trees.

  • 02·The approach

One long room, one wall of glass

The house is a single parallel plan along the ridge: rooms in a line, one long glazed wall toward the water, vertical-grain redwood outside and in. The deck follows the ridge line; the ground below is left to the redwoods and the ferns.

  • 03·The result

    Completing in 2026

The house completes in 2026. The redwood has already begun to silver at the weather gable, as specified. Published with the owner's consent.
