    Mae Rim, Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • Year

    2023

  • Area

    450 m²

  • 01·The brief

    A house off the ground

A family house in a working lychee plantation: raised on columns so the orchard runs beneath, breathing in the wet season, with verandas deep enough to live on through the hottest months.

  • 02·The approach

    Teak columns, deep verandas

The house stands on salvaged teak columns; rooms are lime-washed timber under a broad hipped roof, verandas run all round, and the section lets the plantation's breeze move through the plan. Reclaimed slate and hand-made terracotta carry the floors.

  • 03·The result

    Completed in 2023

The house was completed in 2023 and the orchard continues to be worked beneath it. Two wet seasons have silvered the roof and softened the lime. Published with the family's consent.
